Classroom Management is the beginning good teaching.  It is an ongoing process throughout the school year.  Many teachers start with a plan or use what worked with the last year’s students and changes need to be made as the students begin to reveal themselves to you and one another. Classroom management will start the moment a student walks through the door and “blink” decides what kind of teacher you are going to be.  Certainly, word spreads around a school community and children have big ears but they also have the ability to make up their own minds.   Among the most important factors are the physical setup of the room,  the routines you’ve set up, taught and reinforced and your behavior expectations and general demeanor.  I remember a veteran teacher telling me to “MOVE SLOW TO MOVE FAST”.  Take time (more time than you’ll want) at the beginning to set up your procedures and routines and how the “traffic” will flow around the room as students move throughout the day.
